Nationals Park from a different point of view

Posted on: April 13, 2008 9:37 am

I gave a review of Nat's Park on opening day a few weeks ago.  We sat in U222 against the wall in the furthest section of the nosebleeds the first time around.  We nearly froze, but the game was great as the Nat's won 3-2 on a walk off HR against the Braves.  Saturday I had my 2nd chance to get a look at the park from a different perspective.

The good:  This time around we got seats in Washington Suite 8 thanks to my fiance's work connections.  They were seriously the best seats in the house.  Directly behind home plate.  Free drinks and dogs.  Granite bars and countertops at our seats.  The seats were pretty similar to flying first class, although we barely sat in them.  Great views of the ball park.  The cherry trees were in full bloom and the park itself was in great condition.  It was also great to have a parking pass.  The Metro has done a good job so far of getting people to and from the game, but sometimes it's just nice to drive and avoid the crowd.

The bad:  The game was delayed about 90 minutes due to rain.  The game itself was horrible.  The Nat's gave up 4 runs in the 1st on the way to a 10-2 loss to the Braves.  Our host wasn't very happy about the service, although I thoroughly enjoyed the free Yuengling.  A lot of people in the suite were more concerned about their work connections than the game itself, which is understandable considering the way the Nat's played.

Overall I enjoyed seeing the other side of Nationals Park.  If only the team was a little more competitive.  9 losses in a row and counting.

About Sports in the Pacific Northwest
As a lifelong fan of all things good in the PNW I think it is only appropriate that my first blog focus on the exciting, but often painful relationship between the teams in the PNW and their diehard fans. So many great moments, yet so few championships. That is the life that PNW sports fans have learned to accept. Since my birth in 1982 the only major sports championship that I have ever been able to celebrate was provided courtesy of the 1991 Washington Huskies led by Steve Emtman, Billy Joe Hobert, Mario Bailey, and Lincoln Kennedy. Even their crowning achievement was spilt with the overrated media grubbing clowns down in Miami. On a smaller scale I was able to celebrate two national titles with my alma mater, the University of Portland. However, you have to ask yourself, "if you win two national titles in woman's soccer and your best player was a mannish Canadian, does anybody really care?" Fortunately for those of us lucky enough to grow up in the PNW not every great moment has to be defined by a championship. The Magical Mariner Ride in '95 will never be forgotten. 13 games back on August 13th, the Mariners came back to tie the Angels and then defeat them in a one game playoff. They then went on to win one of the most exciting division series' in history by knocking out the Yankees in extra innings of game 5. Everyone remembers 116 wins in '01, but for most fans the comeback in '95 was so much sweeter. The Sonics under George Karl were contenders year in and year out. The '96 crew led by Payton, Kemp, Perkins, and Schrempf were so close. Unfortunately they ran into a Bulls team that went 72-10. The Seahawks...I can't even bring up Super Bowl XL without cursing, but what a season they had in '05. It's been a good ride and nobody has louder fans. As a current resident of Washington DC, nothing has been more rewarding than seeing my Seahawks send the 'Skins packing 2 of the last 3 years. If I were to point to a single game I would take the "Whammy in Miami." After the split in '03 LSU and USC fans want nothing more than a piece of eachother on the field. In '94 the unranked Huskies went to Miami as 14 point underdogs to settle the split championship of '91 on the field. Miami came into the game riding a 58-game home winning streak. Washington trailed 14-3 at the half and Miami fans had already hung a tombstone for the Huskies to go with the previous 58 visitors. Washington opened the second half with 22 points in 5 minutes and won by a final of 38-20. They later took a sledge hammer to the UW tombstone along with several others before security could reign them in. Those were the probation years, so that was our bowl. I still get goosebumps thinking about it. Hopefully USC and LSU get to do the same thing in the near future. The Yankees, Pats, and Lakers can keep their championships. All I know is that when it happens in Seattle it will be much sweeter than any of them could hope for.
